Change Your Clocks, Change Your Batteries

April 4, 2003

The Arlington Fire Department reminds residents to change the battery in smoke detectors when setting clocks forward one hour on Saturday, April 5. Daylight-saving time begins at 2 a.m. Sunday, April 6.

Changing smoke alarm batteries at least once a year saves lives, local fire officials say. The smoke detector is the first line of defense in fire protection in the home. In the United States, smoke inhalation remains the primary cause of death in residential fires. In Arlington, free smoke detectors and replacement batteries are available for elderly and low income families. Call 817-459-5511 for information.

The Second Annual Operation Installation is Saturday, May 10. The one-day event involves the free installation of smoke detectors in east Arlington neighborhoods. Volunteers will review fire evacuation plans and help inspect homes for hazards. For more information about this program, call Community Services Officer Lt. Randy Ingram at 817-459-5511.
