City’s Newest Shallow Water Play Pool Opens This Summer by April Nixon Arlington residents are invited to preview the City’s newest shallow water play pool. Open House at the Howard Moore Play Pool is 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, March 21. The Howard Moore Play Pool is located at 1999 Bever Blvd. in central Arlington. The new interactive water playground is approximately 18 inches deep and is ideal for children ages 7 years old and younger. Aquatic Program Manager Kym Lange says the new pool offers a "great mommy and me type environment." "We are taking advantage of Spring Break and offering the citizens of Arlington an opportunity to see the facility and get excited about coming here this summer," Lange said. The pool is similar to the interactive water playgrounds at the Helen Wessler Pool and Randol Mill Family Aquatic Center, Lange said. Howard Moore Pool was built in the early 60s. It has been closed since 1999. According to city Parks officials, $651,722 in renovations were jointly funded by the General Fund and a 1997 Parks Bond program. The new interactive play pool replaced an aging, traditional deep-water pool. Although the pool will not be available for swimming during the March 21 Open House, staff members from the Arlington Parks and Recreation Department will be on hand to answer questions and lead facility tours. The official grand opening of the Howard Moore Play Pool is scheduled for Saturday, May 24 from noon to 7 p.m. during the Memorial Day weekend. The entry fee for Arlington residents ages 1 year old and older is $3.50 per person. The entry fee for non-residents is $4 per person.
