Domestic violence is the number one cause of injury to women in the United States. It happens more than rapes, auto accidents and muggings combined. Domestic violence is also believed to be the most under reported crime in the country with the number of actual incidences being 10 times higher than is reported.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Arlington Women’s Shelter Executive Director Mary Lee Hafley says, "the need for awareness is tremendous."

"Women should know they do not have to stay in violent types of situations. Help is available," Hafley said.

Last year, the Arlington Women’s Shelter provided safe, emergency shelter to 589 women and 762 children who escaped domestic violence. Support groups, legal assistance, education, clothing, transportation and housing assistance are among many outreach services available at the Women’s Shelter. On the crisis hotline, counselors are available 24 hours a day.

If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence, call the Women’s Shelter at 817-460-5566 or 1-800-799-SAFE.
