A $60,853 state library grant will be presented to the City of Arlington during the 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8 Arlington City Council Regular Meeting. U.S. Senator Chris Harris and the Texas State Library and Archives Commission will make the formal presentation to Mayor Elzie Odom and the Arlington Public Library in Council Chamber, 101 W. Abram St. The media is invited to attend.

The grant is made possible by a statewide program of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission and Loan Star Libraries. The 77th Texas Legislature funded the program, and with the distribution of grants this fall, nearly $6 million has been distributed to Texas libraries over the past two years.

The Arlington Public Library received $30,888 in grant funding last year and will receive an additional $29,965 this fall as part of the state program. Senator Harris, Texas State Library Commissioner Elizabeth A. Sanders and State Librarian Peggy D. Rudd said the grant program focuses attention on the wealth of resources the Arlington Public Library provides its residents.

"Our Texas libraries help open the door to education, opportunity, and adventure," Harris said. "The state has made a vital and worthwhile commitment to support our libraries, and the Loan Star Libraries program has improved the services of the Arlington Public Library so that more Texas citizens can reap the benefits of a strong public library."

Texas State Library Commissioner and Arlington resident Elizabeth A. Sanders said, "Good public libraries improve the quality of life in a community, and the goal of Loan Star Libraries is to make every Texas library a good one."
