Call For Entries! Compete to Win Up to $1,000
The Deadline is October 11 for the Sharing the Dream Essay Contest

The entry deadline is 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11 for the Arlington Martin Luther King Jr. Sharing the Dream Essay Contest. This writing competition is open to all high school seniors who attend Arlington schools or reside within the city limits of Arlington. The essay theme is "It was Only A Dream, But It Woke Up the World."

Scholarships to help defray the cost of college tuition and books will be awarded to winning essay writers. The first place winner will receive $1,000, the second place winner will receive $750 and the third place winner will receive $500.

Winners will be presented scholarships during the Sharing the Dream Banquet on Friday, Jan. 17 at the University of Texas at Arlington. The winning essay will be read aloud by the author during the banquet.

Essay Contest Guidelines

  • The essay theme or topic is: "It Was Only A Dream, But It Woke Up the World."
  • One essay per student is allowed.
  • Essay must be original and not exceed 500 words.
  • Essay must be double-spaced and typed.
  • The cover sheet must contain student name, school, age, home phone number and address. No other information should be included in the body of the essay.
  • Mail entries to: City of Arlington Office of Communication, Mail Stop 01-0370, Attn. 2002 Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee, P.O. Box 90231, Arlington, TX 76004-3231.
  • The entry deadline is 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, 2002.
  • Essays will be judged solely on content and grammatical structure. The decision of judges is final. Judging will occur during the week of Oct. 20.
