A $3,572 grant from the Texas Council for the Humanities is funding a series of exhibits at the George W. Hawkes Central Library and four Arlington branch libraries.

During July, the Arlington Southwest Branch Library will feature American Anthem, an exhibit that relates major events of national history to music. Topics include George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, the Civil War, cotton and railroads. The library is located at 4000 W. Green Oaks Blvd.

Coinciding with the American Anthem is a musical program, Tunes of the Times, which will be presented at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, July 13 at the Southwest Branch Library. Stephen F. Austin State University history professor Dr. Archie McDonald will perform songs with a guitar accompaniment and lead discussions about the significance of music to the era.

Through the study of humanities, the public becomes familiar with other times, people, places and ideas, according to Library Development Officer Andi Davis. The Texas Council for the Humanities believes education in the humanities encourages individuals to become interpreters of life, society and culture.

Through April 2003, the $3,572 Community Projects Grant from the Texas Council for the Humanities also funds the following programs:

  • Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement - Central Library in February 2003
  • Rural Texas Women at Work 1930-1960 - Woodland West Branch Library in April 2003
  • Voces Americanas/American Voices - A bilingual exhibit and program at the East Branch Library during October 2002
  • Legacy of the Middle East - Northeast Branch Library in December 2002
