The Arlington Fire Department’s Operation Installation will occur Saturday, June 22. The one-day event involves the free installation of smoke detectors in designated east Arlington neighborhoods.

Fire Department spokesperson Randy Ingram said the event is designed to reduce fire related fatalities and injuries.

Event coordinators are seeking volunteers to assist with the June 22 Operation Installation. Bilingual volunteers are also needed. To volunteer, participants are asked to attend an 8 a.m. training session at the Hugh Smith Recreation Center, which is located at 1815 New York Ave.

Volunteer teams will be deployed at 9 a.m. on June 22 to walk from door to door, offering free inspections and installations. Volunteers will also be able to review fire evacuation plans and help inspect the home for hazards.

"Since the success of the first event in October 2001, we have had requests to conduct Operation Installation in more neighborhoods," said American Red Cross Representative Mark Fisher.

During the first Operation Installation in 2001, volunteers installed 1,500 smoke detectors in southeast Fort Worth.

Operation Installation is a cooperative effort of the City of Arlington Fire Department, American Red Cross Chisholm Trail Chapter, TXU, AmeriCredit, Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse and the Citizen Fire Academy.
