The Arlington Fire
Department Says: by Cheryel Carpenter As the hot summer temperatures rise, the Arlington Fire Department is urging motorists not to leave children and pets in unattended locked vehicles. It can prove fatal. During the summer months, temperatures inside a parked vehicle can quickly exceed 100 degrees even when outside temperatures are in the 80s, said Arlington Fire Department spokesman Randy Ingram. In April and May, the Arlington Fire Department responded to 52 incidents involving children left unattended in locked vehicles. There were three incidents involving pets in locked vehicles. The Fire Department reminds motorists that leaving a child unattended in a vehicle can result in a fine of up to $500. "A child can easily climb into an unlocked car and become trapped," Ingram said. "When you park your car, lock it and pocket the keys." Unattended children and animals in a vehicle with the engine and air conditioning running also increase the risk of vehicle theft. Leaving keys in the ignition is punishable by a fine of up to $200. For more information, call the Arlington Fire Department at 817-459-5511.
