Texas Scottish Festival and Highland Games is June 6-8 by Cheryel Carpenter The Texas Scottish Festival and Highland Games is June 6-8 at Maverick Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas at Arlington. The festival was rated by Highlander Magazine as the number one Scottish festival in North America. The festival features some of the best Scottish entertainment in the world, including acclaimed fiddler Alasdair Fraser, balladeer Alex Beaton and the Celtic folk group Clandestine of Houston. The Tierre Verde Gold Club of Arlington will also host the Third Annual Traditions of the Game Golf Tournament on Thursday, June 6 in conjunction with the Texas Scottish Festival and Highland Games. While traditional attire is welcome, participants who wear a kilt will receive a 20 percent discount on soft goods sold at the Tierra Verde Gold Club Pro Shop. For information about the golf tournament, call 817-654-2293. Organizers are expecting more than 50,000 people to attend this year’s Scottish Festival and Highland Games. The event also features professional and amateur athletic team competitions and the U.S. National Scottish Harp Championship, the Southwestern United States Scottish Highland Dance Championship and Scottish National Dance Competition. Solo bag piping and drumming contests and other activities such as Scottish workshops, a scotch whisky tasting seminar, Texas Championship Sheep Dog demonstrations, an All-Scottish Breed Dog Show, Celtic Art Seminar, Scottish Dance Party and a variety of authentic Scottish food, ales and merchandise are also a part of the event.
