Arlington Voters to Consider Public Transit on May 4

The Arlington City Council has placed transit on the May 4 ballot.

This spring, Arlington voters will cast ballots "for" or "against" a proposal to create an Arlington Transportation Authority and levy a proposed tax not to exceed one-quarter of one percent. If approved, the City’s sales tax rate would increase to 7.5 percent. The current sales tax rate is 7.25 percent.

With voter approval, the Arlington Transit Authority would have the power to levy, with the concurrence of the City Council, the local sales and use tax to fund a proposed transit plan that expands Handitran services for the elderly and disabled with connections to Fort Worth’s T, DART and Trinity Railway Express (TRE).

The plan would also provide flexible route services six days a week throughout Arlington and neighborhood links in specified zones with a combination of small buses and vans. Flexible route services will allow passengers to request a curbside stop through phone reservations or curbside drop off when boarding the transit vehicle. The proposed plan would also provide transit service to the Metroplex with connections to the T, DART, TRE and Park and Ride lots.

Early voting begins April 17 and continues each week day through April 30 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Extended hours for early voting will occur on Saturday, April 27.
