The City of Arlington is preparing for icy road conditions forecast to hit the Metroplex later tonight and Wednesday. Beginning at midnight tonight, crews from the Street Division will work throughout the night until 9 a.m. Wednesday, sanding bridges and overpasses in Arlington. Priority areas include bridges over Interstate 20, Interstate 30, Texas Highway 360, Division Street and Pioneer Parkway (State Highway 303). According to Street Superintendent Bill Bateman, the City will deploy four dump trucks with sand inserts. Two additional pickup mounted spreaders will be used to distribute magnesium chloride, a chemical used to melt ice. Sand will also be distributed on major intersections once all the bridges are complete. The Street Division reminds motorist who must travel during icy road conditions to maintain a safe distance between vehicles and allow plenty of time to reach the intended destination. In the event there is a severe winter storm or blizzard that interrupts power and electricity, the City of Arlington could activate its Emergency Operations Center. For more information, contact the City of Arlington Street Division at 817-459-5434 or monitor local radio and television news reports.

How to Prepare for Cold Weather Allow hot and cold water to drip from inside faucets.

  • Open cabinet doors under sinks to expose pipes to heat within the house.
  • Wrap exposed exterior pipes and faucets with foam insulation or newspaper.
  • Remove garden hoses from outside faucets. Cover all openings around the foundation.
  • When out of town for an extended time, turn off water to the house and open faucets to reduce pressure.
  • Bring plants inside. Use a sheet or blanket to cover plants that must remain outside.
  • Bring pets inside. For pets that must remain outside, provide adequate shelter that is elevated and facing away from the wind.
