Arlington to Recognize Animal Essay Contest Winners

The Arlington City Council will recognize the winners of the City’s first Animal Essay Contest at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6 in Council Chamber, 101 W. Abram St.

The essay contest was open to public school students in grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 within the city limits of Arlington. More than 333 essays were submitted.

Essay topics were designed around educational programs presented by the Animal Services Division of the Department of Neighborhood Services. The contest was coordinated by District 2 Council Member Sheri Capehart and the City of Arlington with community sponsorship from Dr. Allan Saxe and the Arlington Star-Telegram.

U.S. Savings Bonds will be presented to the top three winners in each category. First place winners will receive $500, second place winners will receive $350 and third place winners will receive $150. The winners are as follows:

Third Grade Category
Essay Topic: How Do You Know When You Are Ready for a Pet?
First Place: Tess Embrey, Burgin Elementary, Arlington ISD
Second Place: Lora Horn, Larson Academy, Arlington ISD
Third Place: Anthony Catineau, Imogene Gideon Elementary, Mansfield ISD

Fourth Grade Category
Essay Topic: What Can You Do to Keep Your Pet From Getting Lost?
First Place: Bryan Shiroma, Glenn Harmon Elementary, Mansfield ISD
Second Place: Lindsey Reese - Patterson Elementary, Kennedale ISD
Third Place: Dianna Nguyen - Bryant Elementary, Arlington ISD

Fifth Grade Category
Essay Topic: Why Should You Avoid Animals You Don't Know?
First Place: Katie Ashley, Butler Elementary, Arlington ISD
Second Place: Tucker Watkins, Larson Elementary, Arlington ISD
