Thirty City of Arlington Employees Are Active Military Reservists by Cheryel Carpenter Of the City's 3,008 full-time and part-time employees, 30 are active military reservists who could be called to service in the coming weeks. The United States military buildup has involved the recent deployment of 50,000 reservists from all five military branches. According to the City of Arlington Human Resources Department, a majority of the City's active military reservists are from the police and fire departments. Others include Water Utilities' Michael Bruce and Parks Department's Terri Lynch-Winter who are reservists in the U.S. Army. Assistant City Attorney Ivan Bland with the U.S. Air Force has received a tentative order to report for duty. Bland is a colonel who is a part of a one-of-a-kind unit responsible for worldwide logistics support and technical guidance. He has been with the City Attorneys Office since 1987. In the spirit of volunteerism, the City Attorney's Office is providing legal assistance to the City's military reservists who request it. "At this time, it is wise for them to begin thinking about wills and power of attorney to handle important business transactions while they are away," City Attorney Jay Doegey said. "The military offers this type of legal assistance, but we have stepped in to volunteer our time to help them out." The City Attorney's Office is also briefing department directors about the rights and responsibilities under the federal law regarding the employment status of military reservists who could be called to active duty for an indefinite amount of time. The last such deployment occurred on the eve of Operation Desert Storm in January 1991 when more than 265,000 National Guard and reserve members were mobilized. |
