About Teen Court

Teen Court is an alternative sentencing program whereby a teen defendant requests or is mandated by a judge to be sent before a court of his/her peers. In Teen court the attorneys, prosecutors, bailiffs, and court clerks are teen volunteers. Judges are adult attorneys or adult volunteers with teen court experience. Teen court juries are a mix of teen volunteers and teen defendants who are serving a jury term as part of their sentencing. The Teen Court program is designed to educate teens about the judicial system so as to make them stakeholders in the “system” and the community. The program also makes teen defendants take responsibility for their own actions, enabling the teen to see and understand the affects of their actions on, and their place in the community and society as a whole.
