Restaurant Inspections Continue Uninterrupted

The City of Arlington Community Services Environmental Health Division conducts food-based health inspections in partnership with the Bureau Veritas Group.

On January 20, 2009 the City Council approved the contract for a third-party vendor to conduct food-based inspections, which includes everything from pre-packaged foods in convenience stores and grocery stores to bars, fast food establishments, special events and full-service restaurants. Inspections are conducted routinely and on a complaint basis to ensure compliance with the City food ordinances.

Arlington conducts more than 1,700 food-based inspections annually.

Effective January 23, 2009 the city eliminated five full-time, food-based health inspector positions from its General Fund budget. In anticipation of this reduction in force, the City entered into an agreement for health inspections with Bureau Veritas. Additionally, the City retained two, full-time licensed staff positions to follow-up inspections and enforcement action as needed. Bureau Veritas began performing inspections on January 23, 2009 so that food-based inspections were uninterrupted. City of Arlington staff will also provide quality control of inspections to ensure service expectations are being met.

The Vital Statistics Division of Community Services Wins Five-Star State Award
The City of Arlington, TX (pop. 332,969) Vital Statistics Division has been recognized by the Texas Department of State Health Services for its performance in reporting births, deaths and other important information. The Five-Star Award is distributed to local registrar offices, including city secretaries, county clerks and county health departments, according to Deputy Local Registrar/Vital Statistic Coordinator Elbia Hernandez.
Judges critique and evaluate timeliness, customer service, application of technology, training, and accuracy of filing, Hernandez said. Arlington’s vital statistics office issues birth and death certificates, amends certificates, and records name changes and court-ordered adoptions. The office is a division of the Community Services Department.
