SMARTEST YARD OF THE WEEK CONTEST

Winner: William Johnson

For more than a decade, Mr. Johnson has enjoyed the variety of butterflies, hummingbirds, and other wildlife that are attracted to his native and drought tolerant landscaping. Mr. Johnson’s lawn was once solid St. Augustine grass that required large amounts of water, fertilizer, and mowing up to three times a week. After preparing the soil with compost, lava sand, seaweed, dry molasses and other organic principles as recommended by Howard Garrett, he decided to “go all the way” and remove all of the existing turf grass and replace it with a variety of drought tolerant groundcovers, perennials, and shrubs. Plants that can be found include Dwarf and Standard Mexican Petunia, Red Yucca, Mexican Oregano, Autumn Sage, Big Red Sage, Russian Sage, Pink Guara, Turk’s Cap, Columbine, and Desert Willow. Congratulations to Mr. Johnson for having this week's Smart Yard!

Mr. Johnson’s backyard provides a good example of utilizing native and drought tolerant landscaping in combination with rock hardscape that creates a low maintenance area that is also aesthetically pleasing.
