To be a leader in protecting the environment and public health the
City of Arlington knows we must set the example.
To accomplish this an interdepartmental working group, representing
the entire organization, was formed in 2008 to look at internal
policies and procedures and to make recommendations on how City of
Arlington employees can be better environmental stewards on the job.
The Green Policy Council’s (GPC) goals have included creating a
uniform waste and recycling policy that will expand the
organizations current recycling opportunities and bring single
stream recycling to the City of Arlington as a commercial business,
bring recycling to city facilities were it was not previously
available, launching an aggressive employee education campaign on
simple things that can be done at work to make the City of Arlington
a more “green” operation, and the implementation of new policies
including vehicle idling reduction, and reduction on the
use/purchase of bottled water.
Major areas of focus for 2009 include trip reduction and green
transportation education and incentives, expanded public education
and environmental awareness though activities like Earth Hour, Earth
Day and Ecofest Arlington, new policies like uniform landscape,
irrigation and pest management standards, additional recycling
opportunities including special waste streams like cell phones,
batteries, and toner cartridges and the greening of municipal
operations through energy conservation in the area of technology.
