A Big Night
National Night Out Sets Record with 99
Neighborhood Events
|
Arlingtonites gathered in such large
numbers for National Night Out last week
that a city record was set. According to
the Police Department's Community
Services Division, Arlington registered
99 events, more than any other year.
One of the largest gatherings occurred
at California Lane Park. "We don't have
neighborhoods like we used to," said
Dolan Maner, who has lived in Arlington
since 1931. "Events like this get
families out. It gets people out to talk
with their neighbors, police and city
officials." Police Chief Theron Bowman
said National Night Out is another
opportunity to "build stronger
partnerships between the police and the
communities we serve."

A "Grand" Opening
Music Under the Stars Draws Thousands to
Downtown
|
 Under
the stars, more than 1,800 people
gathered for Opening Night of the Levitt
Pavilion for the Performing Arts in
downtown Arlington. The night included a
dedication and official ribbon cutting.
Special guest Elizabeth Levitt Hirsch
who serves as vice president of
the Mortimer Levitt Foundation was
applauded for helping to make
the pavilion possible
with a capital investment of $250,000
for construction
plus $100,000 a year for the first five
years of concert operations.
Arlingtonites lounged in lawn chairs and
on picnic blankets and danced under the
stars to two-time grammy award-winning
band Brave Combo. Children's performer
Eddie Coker and Peruvian artists Wayanay
Inka on Saturday and the jazzy sounds of
Crawfish on Sunday drew more than 5,000
people to downtown over the Oct. 10-12
opening weekend. The Levitt Pavilion is
the fifth and newest member of the
family of Levitt Pavilions across the
country. It is the only one in Texas.
