NEIGHBORHOOD MONTH EVENTS

June is Neighborhood Month in Arlington!

Neighborhood month is a 30 day celebration hosted by COA in partnership with various neighborhood organizations showcasing neighborhoods, celebrating the contributions and accomplishments of residents and community stakeholders, and encouraging civic pride. The City of Arlington celebrated neighborhoods by awarding matching neighborhood grants and recognizing the graduates of the 2007 Arlington Neighborhood Academy.

On Thursday, June 7, 2007 four neighborhood organizations were awarded grant funding for improvement projects in their communities. These four neighborhood organizations will share an estimated $19,194 as part of the city’s new Neighborhood Matching Grants program. Award announcement and grant presentations were held in the Council Briefing Room on the third floor of City Hall and included a reception and neighborhood exhibits.

The Briarhill Neighborhood Association received $7,500 for streetscape repair and landscaping. The Heart of Arlington Neighborhood Association received $8,210 for new street toppers and the Rolling Hills Neighborhood Association received $2,984 for new neighborhood entrance signage and landscaping. Arlington Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee received a $500 matching grant for a neighborhood art scholarship for youths.

Neighborhood Academy graduation ceremony was held at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 28, 2007 in the Council Chamber. Approximately 32 adults and 20 youth completed a service project and four weeks of course instruction on leadership, organization and civic engagement.
