NEIGHBORHOOD ACTION PLANS

Click on the cover to download the handbook!Neighborhood Action Planning is an opportunity for citizens to shape the future of their neighborhood and their overall quality of life. By creating a forum for citizen involvement in addressing the neighborhood’s issues, we enable creative problem solving and a spirit of teamwork between the City and the Neighborhood. By addressing issues identified in the neighborhood action planning process proactively, we can avoid the social and economic impacts of ‘rebuilding’ a neighborhood.

The result of developing a Neighborhood Action Plan is that the strategies, goals and action steps serve as a guide for the neighborhood’s future efforts. Implementation of the Neighborhood Action Plan will be the responsibility of the Neighborhood Team of citizens, working with the appropriate department of the City of Arlington and other community partners as identified in the plan.

Neighborhood Action Plans are developed through the following phases:

PHASE 1

bullet Volunteer to assist in planning the introductory meeting.
bullet Form a planning leadership team.
bullet Recruit additional participants from the neighborhood to serve on the team.
bullet Recruit volunteers to serve as Block Captains.

PHASE 2

bullet Conduct Neighborhood Survey.
bullet Conduct Land Use Surveys.
bullet Develop Outreach Plan.
bullet Develop team Mission Statement.
bullet Identify neighborhood strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.

PHASE 3

bullet Compile list of issues to be addressed by the plan.
bullet Identify strategies to address issues.
bullet Review staff comments and make revisions to strategies as necessary.
bullet Report findings and needs for special projects.

PHASE 4

bullet Finalize issues / strategies identification.
bullet Submit revisions of issues / strategies.
bullet Develop implementation priorities for issues / strategies.
bullet Assign responsible parties for follow-up on implementation.
