A three-bedroom home that sat vacant for nearly six months in a
south Arlington neighborhood is now owned and occupied by a family
of four thanks to federal stimulus money authorized by Congress and
administered by the City.
The Nguyen family is the first in Arlington to purchase a home
through the Neighborhood Stabilization Program, which is aimed at
stabilizing U.S. neighborhoods in target areas where foreclosure
rates are highest.
To date, Arlington has received $2 million to be used to acquire and
rehabilitate foreclosed or abandoned homes.
Mayor Robert Cluck joined the family in their driveway for a ribbon
cutting ceremony today. They were joined by realtors, new neighbors
and representatives from the Arlington Housing Authority and U.S.
Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Following presentations of flowers and gifts to supporters, City
Council member Sheri Capehart proudly welcomed the Nguyen family to
District 2.
Through an interpreter, the family thanked all for helping to make
their dream of homeownership come true. Through the NSP program,
Community Services Assistant Director David Zappasodi said seven
more Arlington families will soon close on their new home. About 14
