As part of President Obama’s United We Serve summer initiative, the City of
Arlington is providing community volunteer opportunities for youths.
The Responsible Pet Grooming Youth Academy is open to all youths age 12-18. The
volunteer program has been registered with the Corporation for National and
Community Service, the federal agency dedicated to fostering service in
communities across the country. Volunteer recruitment is underway, according to
Chris Huff.
This summer, the president has renewed his call to all Americans to identify
needs within their communities and engage in meaningful service from June 22
through Sept. 11, which is a national day of service and remembrance.
The Responsible Pet Grooming Youth Academy begins Saturday, June 27. The academy
is four, two-hour sessions. It continues Saturday, July 25 and Aug. 8.
According to the Volunteer Coordinator Antoinette Garner, the Animal Services
Center will offer youths an opportunity to learn what it means to be responsible
pet owners. The Animal Services Center cares for more than 11,000 animals a
year.
The sessions are free and registration is required. Space is limited. At the
conclusion of a two-hour session, youth volunteers will receive a certificate of
completion documenting their volunteer work.
“Economic recovery is as much about what you’re doing in your communities as
what we’re doing in Washington,” the president stated in a news release. “It’s
going to take all of us working together.”
