Counting the Homeless -
Arlington Volunteers Made it Happen
More than 50 volunteers hit the streets and shelters on a cold,
brisk Thursday night.
People from all walks of life - teachers, social workers, pastors
and students - came together to provide a census of the homeless.
The homeless count on Jan. 29 was part of a national effort led
locally by the Tarrant County Homeless Coalition and the Arlington
Housing Authority.
Last year, the Arlington homeless numbered 398. The count is
conducted each year to fulfill the HUD requirement for federal
funding for homeless supportive services and to better understand
shifting trends of homelessness.
“The data we receive assists in measuring the degree of success in
hopes of ending homelessness in the city,” said Arlington Assistant
Director of Community Services David Zappasodi.
Volunteer teams of up to four were paired with Arlington police
officers. Armed with flashlights and surveys, the teams canvassed
areas of the city known for having greater homeless populations. The
SH360/I-30 bridge and Division Street were among the locations.
Results of the count will be revealed on Feb. 5 at the State of the
Homeless Public Forum in Fort Worth.
“We couldn’t possibly do this without the help of volunteers,”
Housing Management Supervisor Lanesha Linzy told the crowds before
heading out onto the streets.
Coming February 15: Meet some of the volunteers. Get the results.
