Another Milestone in the New Cowboys Stadium is Reached
Construction of the new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington reached
another milestone Tuesday when the first of two arches supporting
the retractable roof was completed.
Arlington Mayor Robert Cluck, City Council members and other city
officials joined Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to mark the event.
They stood in an upper deck level on the west side of the stadium as
the final keystone piece of the arch truss section weighing 110,000
pounds was slowly put in place.
At 660,800 square feet, the stadium’s roof will be one of the
largest domed sports structures in the world.
“And we have many more milestones we’ll be celebrating along the
way,” the Mayor told the news media. “We celebrate every time we
can.”
The arch truss soars at 292 feet above the playing field.
Construction of the second arch located on the north side of the
stadium will begin in November and will be completed by April 2008.
Jones consider the arches “the visual” makeup of the stadium.
“We know that this is the largest stadium that’s ever been built,
period, on the planet, in terms of more square feet,” said Jones.
“To give you an idea, we have 970,000 square feet of entombed space
at Texas Stadium. We’ll have 3 million entombed square feet here.
The design of this stadium and the ability to have it free of the
elements is enough to get you really excited.”
The stadium is scheduled for completion in the summer prior to
the start of the 2009 NFL season.
