New Animal Services Center To Open Summer 2008

The new Animal Services Center, which will be located at 1000 S.E. Green Oaks Blvd., is scheduled to be opened in the Summer of 2008. The new center will provide the following features:

Key Functionality Gains in the New Facility

  • Synergy with Southeast Branch Library, Dog Park and Fish Creek Linear Park
  • High traffic location with good visibility
  • Community / Animal Training Room
  • Spay Neuter / Wellness Clinic
  • Adoption Mall / animals viewed through glass for increased adoptions
  • 143 - Canine kennel / puppy condos (increase of 29 kennels)
  • 139 - Feline cages / cat condos (increase of 21 cages)
  • 4 - Meet / greet animal and get acquainted rooms
  • Separate air-handling systems (reduces airborne diseases)
  • Exotic animal room

“Green” Design Elements

  • Drought resistant “Texas Smartscape” Landscaping in lieu of traditional species
  • Utilization of R-30 roof insulation in lieu of conventional R-20 insulation
  • Utilization of R-19 wall insulation in lieu of conventional R-11 insulation
  • Utilization of “Low-E glass” in lieu of normal tinted glass
  • Utilization of ample natural light by means of clerestory window and skylights
  • Utilization of extended canopy eaves at windows and entrances in order to enhance sun shading and reduce heat gain
