SAN FRANCISCO, California (AP) -- The first major airlift of dogs from
the hurricane-battered Gulf Coast left Louisiana on Sunday, carrying

A Call for Entries!
City Launches Annual Writing Contest for Students
The Fourth Annual Arlington Essay Contest starts
October 18. The contest is open to public and private school students
in grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 who reside within the city limits of
Arlington. The entry deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5.
The top three winners in each grade level will
receive Series EE U.S. Savings Bonds. First place winners will receive
a $500 bond, second place winners will receive a $350 bond and third
place winners will receive a $150 bond. Winners will also be
recognized at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 14 during the Regular
Meeting of the Arlington City Council.
This year’s essay topic was designed around the
City of Arlington and PAWS 2005 efforts to raise funds to construct
and sustain a new Animal Services Center.
Students are invited to write an essay on the
following topic related to the design and features of a new Animal
Services Center: If you were asked to design a new animal shelter:
What would it look like?
What features would it include?
What type of equipment would be needed to care for and house the
animals?
What services would be provided?
What active roles do animal shelters have in your community?
Mail entries to: Administrative Services
Department, Attn: Animal Essay Contest, Mail Stop 01-0370, P.O. Box
90231, Arlington, Texas 76004-3231. Entries may also be hand-delivered
to the Water Customer Service Desk located on the first floor of City
Hall at 101 W. Abram St. or to the Water Utilities South Service
Center at 1100 S.W. Green Oaks Blvd.

 Arlington ISD Students Love the
Animal Shelter
Amos Elementary School presented the City of Arlington Animal
Services Center with a $860.50 gift card during a special presentation
at the school in March. Animal Services mascot Bowser Bob and his
friends from the shelter made a special appearance to thank the
students for their contribution. Physical Education Teacher Joyce
Sinclair said the "Pennies for Pets" Program involved the
entire school of 521 pre-kindergarten through sixth-grade students
over a 10-day period.
