As part of President Obama’s United We Serve summer initiative, the City of
Arlington is providing community volunteer opportunities for youths.
The Responsible Pet Grooming Youth Academy is open to all youths age 12-18. The
volunteer program has been registered with the Corporation for National and
Community Service, the federal agency dedicated to fostering service in
communities across the country. Volunteer recruitment is underway, according to
Chris Huff.
This summer, the president has renewed his call to all Americans to identify
needs within their communities and engage in meaningful service from June 22
through Sept. 11, which is a national day of service and remembrance.
The Responsible Pet Grooming Youth Academy begins Saturday, June 27. The academy
is four, two-hour sessions. It continues Saturday, July 25 and Aug. 8.
According to the Volunteer Coordinator Antoinette Garner, the Animal Services
Center will offer youths an opportunity to learn what it means to be responsible
pet owners. The Animal Services Center cares for more than 11,000 animals a
year.
The sessions are free and registration is required. Space is limited. At the
conclusion of a two-hour session, youth volunteers will receive a certificate of
completion documenting their volunteer work.
“Economic recovery is as much about what you’re doing in your communities as
what we’re doing in Washington,” the president stated in a news release. “It’s
going to take all of us working together.”
On June 28, 2009, Respect-A-Bull, Inc. had a free Fix-A-Bull Spay
and Neuter Clinic.
Kristie Miller, President of Respect-A-Bull, Inc., in partnership
with City of Arlington Community Services Educator, Chris Huff
hosted a clinic that gave free rabies vaccinations, free microchips,
free city license and a free alter for pitbulls of registered
attendees. The 34 owners attended a two hour "Responsible Pet Owner
Class" taught by Animal Control Investigator, Jason Feick. Pitbull
owners had an opportunity to ask questions regarding dangerous
animal laws, city licenses, and other city ordinances.
A special thank you to Dr. Campbell and the team from TCAP for their
efforts and commitment to helping make this clinic a success.

Arlington Animal Services Center Grand Opening
The City of Arlington recently celebrated the grand opening of the
new, state-of-the-art Arlington Animal Services Center with fun and
festivities for the whole family. Some of the activities included
trained Dog Scouts that painted and played music for the audience, a
Celebrity Dog Wash, award winning contests, special exhibitions and
educational training classes. Most of all, many adorable pets were
adopted on grand opening day.
Special thanks to all of the contributors and volunteers who
dedicate time and energy and for helping make the grand opening such
a success. Visit the Animal Services website from home to view a
link to a memory video of the event created by one of our talented
volunteers, Tiffany Landreth, with photos taken by Tiffany,
